As the design lead, my goal has always been to create solutions that meet real-world needs, balancing functionality, aesthetics, and user experience. When tasked with designing the Nomba Mini, I saw an opportunity to address a core challenge faced by businesses today—payment flexibility in a fast-paced, mobile-driven world.
The result? A sleek, portable, and powerful POS terminal that redefines how businesses process transactions, wherever they are.
In today’s dynamic business environment, the tools merchants use need to adapt to their needs—not the other way around. Many businesses, especially those operating in markets, taxis, pop-up shops, or mobile settings, struggle with:
Bulky, immobile POS devices.
Poor connectivity in areas with low internet penetration.
Inefficiencies in processing digital receipts.
High transaction costs and device fees.
The challenge was clear: to design a POS device that solved these pain points while being affordable, durable, and user-friendly.
The Design Approach
From the outset, I wanted the Nomba Mini to feel less like a tool and more like an extension of the business itself. Here’s how we approached the design:
Portability as a Priority
The device had to be lightweight, compact, and easy to carry—something that could literally fit in your pocket or a small bag. This portability makes the Nomba Mini perfect for business owners who need to move frequently or operate in unconventional spaces.
Standalone Simplicity
A key insight from research was the need for a POS terminal that didn’t rely on additional gadgets. I designed the Nomba Mini to function independently, with built-in 4G and WiFi connectivity to ensure seamless transactions anytime, anywhere.Eco-Friendly Receipts
Digital transformation is at the heart of modern business, so I incorporated a feature to send digital receipts via WhatsApp, SMS, or email. It’s fast, paperless, and aligns with the sustainability goals of forward-thinking businesses.A Modern Look for a Modern Tool
While functionality was paramount, I also focused on aesthetics. The device’s minimalist design reflects the simplicity and efficiency it offers, reinforcing trust and professionalism.Affordability Without Compromise
To make the Mini accessible to businesses of all sizes, I ensured the design supported cost-efficient manufacturing without sacrificing quality. Priced at ₦30,000, it’s one of the most affordable options on the market, yet packed with features that deliver immense value.

Features That Matter
Long-Lasting Battery: Quick to charge, the Nomba Mini can power through a busy workday without interruptions.
Low Transaction Fees: Designed with merchants in mind, the Mini offers competitive fees and eliminates the stress of daily transaction targets.
Flexibility Across Industries: Whether in a bustling market, a chic café, or a moving taxi, the Nomba Mini adapts effortlessly.
The Impact
Since its launch, the Nomba Mini has been adopted by thousands of businesses across various sectors, from retail to hospitality. Its portability and functionality have not only streamlined payment processes but also enhanced customer experiences, helping businesses thrive in an increasingly cashless economy.
What This Project Taught Me
Designing the Nomba Mini reinforced a critical truth: the best designs solve real problems. By focusing on the needs of merchants and their customers, we created a device that doesn’t just process payments—it empowers businesses to grow.
For me, this project was more than just about designing hardware. It was about delivering a solution that works seamlessly in the hands of people who use it, helping them focus on what matters most—their customers.
The Nomba Mini is not just a POS terminal; it’s a testament to how thoughtful design can transform everyday business operations.
